7 1/2 x 19 1/4 H Antique Round Glass Dome
BOA 499 7 1/2 x 19 1/4 H Antique Round Glass Dome
This antique round glass dome is an exact replacement for many antique displays. This dome can be cut to any height.
Most new round glass domes have a bead on the bottom. The bead gives greater strength to the glass. This bead is created by holding the glass dome at the top and rotating it while applying a gas flame near the point of its height. The glass melts at that point with the bottom dropping off and leaving a bead to seal the work. Oval glass domes do not have this bead generally since the flame can not be held in place as the dome rotates.
Many of our customers have the feeling that older glass domes will have more bubbles. This is generally not the case. It is the desire of all glass blowers to not have bubbles in the glass.
We offer free cUSA shipping on order over $399 and pay 1/2 of the International shipping costs. We generally ship by USPS.com as opposed to UPS or FedEX. UPS and FedEX use more conveyor belts for sorting packages and glass does not like to be dropped from conveyor belt to conveyor belt. We have been packing and shipping for over 25 years and have better than 95% safety record. We guarantee to get the order to you in one piece.
Victorian Antique Oval Glass Domes were very popular in Europe and often used in the wedding ceremony. A glass dome covered a display called a ‘du marriage’ which held a pin cushion, mirrors and baby pictures of the bride and groom. Money and notes were pined to the cushion for the bride and groom. The du marriage display was stapled to a base and covered with the oval glass dome.
One way to tell if a glass dome is old is by checking the color of the glass. Today we have very pure raw materials. In the older days this was not the case. Many of the older glass domes will have a slight blue or gray tint to the glass. It generally does not detract from the item displayed.
