You often see glass domes with a glass ball knob on the top of the dome. These are common for food product covers such as cake or cheese covers. There were very few antique clocks that used this type of dome. Two exceptions are the Lighthouse clock and a glass dome to cover collets used in watchmaking.
A common display in Europe is to make a plaster mold of a childs hand and wrist and place it under a glass dome. These displays were very popular in Victorian times.
Antique Oval Glass Domes can be found that cover wax items such as flowers or fruit, sea shell art, taxidermy of birds and other pets including frogs and dogs.
Often time you will see a braided chord around the base of a glass dome. This provides a finish effect for a dome. Sometimes when a glass dome gets broken and an exact size dome can not be found the braded chord is placed into the groove and the replacement glass dome fits just inside the chord or just outside of it. The chord has the effect of holding the glass dome in place and again gives a very pleasing effect.
