Most antique glass domes have a gold or brownish tape on the bottom. This tape has two effects, first it covers any minor chipping created when the dome is cut to size and second it provides a slight cushion when the dome is placed in position.

A common display in Europe is to make a plaster mold of a childs hand and wrist and place it under a glass dome. These displays were very popular in Victorian times.

The chord has the effect of holding the glass dome in place and again gives a very pleasing effect.
